"Sex weakens the legs!" That famous quote from the movie "Rocky" sums up the bias of many athletes about pre competition sex. Researchers from McGill University found that many professional athletes abstain from sex before a game. But, there is no evidence to support this practice. We know that sex boosts testosterone in men! Researchers say the psychological effects of pre-game sex have not been studied and might make a difference. It may in fact have negative consequences. Especially if the sex is unsatisfying.
Sex, particularly with a new partner, induces a major stress response. Performance anxiety during sex might carry over into the playing field and cause problems. Casey Stengal, the famous Yankee and Mets manager put it this way: "It's not the sex, but staying up all night looking for it, that fatigues the athlete."
In addition it is also worth noting the impact that relationships can have on our health and well being in general. We have all had experiences where fights at home and trouble with the girlfriend can cause us to become distracted in our day to day lives. Athletes must engage in a period of both intense training and unwaivering focus to prepare for an event. And it goes without saying that a turbulent relationship at home can no doubt carry over into the athletes ability to stay focused.
